I Ain’t Gettin’ Away Wit Nuttin’
August 9th, 2006Steve Oberg over at Family Man Librarian (subscribe to his blog, BTW), thinks I’m able to “get away with not using tags or categories” in my blog. He then says:
“[B]ased on my experience, if I want something I have to say to be read or picked up elsewhere, it had better be tagged or categorized somehow.”
Interesting thoughts and I don’t disagree with him. Well, not fully. I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again (to save the hassle of looking up when I’ve said it before). One major key to successful blogging is good content, content, content…and, oh, did I mention content? I’m sure that I miss my share of traffic because I don’t tag my posts or that my blog doesn’t show up on Technorati (it’s true - I haven’t been able to claim it for years - maybe they knew that I worked for a competitor), but my stats have increased steadily over the years.
So, people find me. Why? Who knows, but they do. And it might be because I’ve been doing it for a while, because I do it every day, and/or that the stuff I write about is worth reading (probably not the latter). Whatever the reason, it’s not because I don’t tag my posts.
While I’m on the subject, I’ve never believed in tagging blog posts because I think it will lead to “human spam tagging”. There are many library blogs that use an extraordinary amount of tags to get their content in certain places, even if the posts aren’t warranted to be there. I’m pro-tagging, but for others to tag blog posts and web content, not the blogger himself. I’m in the minority here, but, hey, I’m just sayin’.
