Isn’t every day Blog Day?

Recommendations with Reservations

August 31st, 2006

Suggestica got hammered in the comments and on other blogs. Oh well.
Mita (a very cool librarian in Canada) then wrote:
“[W]hen it comes to my next reading selection, I already know what I like to read. What I want a system that will tell me what I should read.”
“Sometimes we should be [...]

Library Spring

August 31st, 2006

Why am I subscribing to Library Spring? Because of the first post. An excerpt:
“Why Library Spring? The world of libraries is hardly blossoming. Another name could just as well have been Identity Crisis. But it is all too easy to be cynical, an protective mode to slip into.”
Love. That. Quote.
“I have been blogging [...]

This is interesting

Suggestica provides book recommendations from experts in certain fields (Deepak Chopra is in there!). According to Suggestica, there are 4 types of book buyers.
“+ Browsers: These people go to a bookstore and start browsing the sections of their interest. They buy one or more books based on several factors – including [...]

Save MySpace? – Does Anyone Care?

August 30th, 2006

Peter Cashmore of Mashable fame, blogs about DOPA and the goal of the Save Your Space group to reach 1 Million signatures.
“[W]ith only 3,230 signatures so far, it doesn’t look like they’re going to make it. It seems that the average MySpace user is either oblivious to the legislation, or doesn’t understand it – something [...]

Which Feed to Use

August 29th, 2006

Michael Sauers blogs:
“[T]here’s a move afoot to stop using the terms RSS and ATOM when it comes to presenting this technology to users (look at IE7 and you’ll see what I’m talking about, the word RSS doesn’t appear anywhere,) and just stick to the term ‘feed’. KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid. Take a look at [...]

August 27th, 2006

Anywho, Gary Pice posted about a list of RSS feeds provided by the NLM. Plus, a podcast. Neat!

All Rise! RSS is Now in Session

August 24th, 2006

Ok, that title doesn’t make much sense.
Gary Price has the suweeeeeet news that the 7th Circuit Court now has an RSS feed for their recent opinions AND audio feeds for their court oral arguments.
From the announcement:
“I think having the briefs and arguments up on the Web makes for a much better-educated bar,” said Circuit Executive [...]

Blogalogue

August 23rd, 2006

Glenn Harper, who is the Information Resources Librarian and Ringleader of the Blograrians at Frankston Library Service sent me a note about their new blog called Blogalogue. This quote comes directly from his e-mail:
“The concept for Blogalogue is perhaps a little different from most other public library blogs in Australia in that from the [...]

BookMooch

August 23rd, 2006

I got an e-mail from John Buckman, who runs a site called BookMooch, which he describes as a “A community for used book exchange”. I had seen it before but didn’t get a chance to play with with it and I don’t now. I took a look at the about page and [...]

RSS For Court Decisions

August 22nd, 2006

Steve Matthews, my fellow law librarian to the north, writes:
“If you’re still waiting for case law RSS like I am, try this trick… Conduct an advanced search, using the date restrictors, on your favourite decision database, like this. Then, take that URL, and paste it into an HTML feed scraper like feedtier. In this case, [...]

Mr-T’s

August 21st, 2006

When Barbie and I traveled to Israel in the summer of ‘92, we visited Mr-T on many occasions. At that time, REM was huge and I bought about 5 Hebrew T-shirts of the band. Tonight, Barbie sent me this one:

At the risk of striking up another conversation about Israel, I wanted to share [...]

New To the Collection RSS Feeds

August 21st, 2006

I love libraries that have RSS feeds for new titles in their collection. Many do this now and it puts a smile on my face to see it.
Bond University (I think I’ve written about them before – maybe on this topic) has three feeds

It looks like they don’t have many new books every month, [...]

More Proof

August 19th, 2006

Stephen Abram blogs about Google execs selling their stock and then says:
“I’ll show you my commitment if you’ll show me yours. There’s a world of difference between working for your community and working for yourself.”
Just more proof that we need to remind ourselves that Google is not in it to make us happy. Google [...]

Forbes on PubSub

August 19th, 2006

There’s a piece in Forbes about PubSub:
“Don’t wait for the happy ending. That $4 million is down the drain, and PubSub can’t even afford to file for bankruptcy. No one has filed suit–yet.”
How very sad. I miss my days at PubSub. Most of the guys around the office were a fun bunch [...]

“Information Pizza”

August 18th, 2006

Remember that RSS Tutiorial that Luke Rosenberger promised us? Well it’s online now and it rocks!
“Are you tired of going out searching over and over for your topic of interest? Or constantly checking and re-checking website after website to see the latest updates? There’s a better way! Your libraries offer you tools and services [...]

No More Presentations

August 18th, 2006

Barbie and I had an agonizing conversation this week. It was long, full of number crunching, and very important for our future. But in the end, we came to the conclusion that I knew we would. As of today, and for the unforeseeable future, I will not be accepting any more speaking [...]

Help For Those Who Panic

August 15th, 2006

After being “immediately bored” after cracking open her library school introduction class text (and then almost panicing), Librarienne comes up with a great idea:
“So I decided that I needed to give myself something to keep nearby for those moments when I ask “Is this all there is?” which will probably happen quite often [...]

August 15th, 2006

For the first time in about a year, I just glanced at my blog statistics. Wow! I want to thank everyone for reading, linking, and commenting over the past 6 years. My numbers are the highest they have ever been. I must be doing something right, eh?
