Librarian Bloggers Down Under
July 9th, 2006Australian librarian bloggers have always been a big part of my reading repertiore. Lately, CW has caught my interest. For example, today CW writes about a new blog that was started up for the “Australian Libraryland”.
It’s called Libraries Interact and has information about the collaboration on the first post:
“Well… we wanted [...]
Happy Birthday
July 8th, 2006I’m never sure if blogs should have anniversaries or birthdays. When I think of anniversaries, I think marriage, so I guess it should be a birthday (although some say that they are married to their blog).
Anywho, congrats to Christie and the folks over at Blogjunction on their 1st Birthday.
Upcoming Presentations
July 8th, 2006As I have mentioned in the past, I’m cutting down on the number of speaking engagements that I accept, mostly doing regional (East Coast) stuff (less travel), not including ALA/ITI events that are part of various contracts. Here’s my fall schedule, which is filling up fast.
August 18th - National Business Institute - Long Island, [...]
Scarlet Begonias
July 8th, 2006I was singing Ari to sleep last night. After fubbing the lyrics to Scarlet Begonias, I decided to take a look at David Dodd’s book (which sits on my nighttable for easy access). What a beautuful poem. I love these lines:
“I ain’t often right
but I’ve never been wrong
It seldom turns out the [...]
Library Thing Reaches Out to Communities
July 7th, 2006Doing what libraries do best, the folks at Library Thing will have a booth at a library event in Maine:
“The Thomas Memorial Library Foundation is sponsoring our table at a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the library rennovation. And free accounts will be available at the circulation desk for the rest of the year. [...]
Georgia State University Library Construction Idea
July 7th, 2006The Georgia State University Library is undergoing some major construction. How do I know? Well, they are Flickring it. You know what would be suweeet? They should add the pictures (via their Flickr feed) to their most incredible news/blog page, so that students and faculty can keep up with the work [...]

Originally uploaded by dansette.
Because I had such a crazy week at work (was it only 3 days?), let’s play America’s fastest growing game, Caption This Photo (in the comments as always - we had 25 submissions last week!). Here’s mine:

RSS Rip Offs
July 6th, 2006John Tropea is mad that someone is ripping off his feed and publishing it elsewhere:
“Not only is it wrong, but they may also make money off my content from the ads on their site…I guess this would only be a concern if it was a well known highly trafficked blog, in this case action would [...]
What A Long Strange Trip
July 6th, 2006Yikes.
This morning, someone apparently jumped in front of the train at my station and (we think) died. The funny thing is that many commuters were upset. Not because a life ended, but because they were going to be late for work! C’mon people, a bit of compassion. It’s not always about you. [...]
Lost Librar* Blogs
July 6th, 2006I was just posting an update on more librar* blogs that were sent over today (there were many - How exciting), but then something happened and the post died. Kaput. Gone. Finito. So, I’ll have to post it tomorrow.
I’m going to bed. I’m pooped after trying to get [...]
Yet More on SCSL
July 5th, 2006Two comments from my posts on the new and improved South Carolina State Library site, gets me continuously giddy:
One from Tao, the Web Administrator - “We didn’t expect such overwhelming responses from our launch. It is definitely exciting to have the new site. All the sudden, my job as the web administrator became so much [...]
Do You Subscribe to Yourself?
July 5th, 2006This is a topic that I’ve written about from time to time. Do you subscribe to your own feed? I’ve always advocated to do for many reasons. CW is right:
“Sirexkat checks her aggregator to see if there are new posts from her own blog. I don’t do that, but I do [...]
More Librar* Blogs
July 4th, 2006I just realized that I haven’t posted a list of new-to-me librar* blogs in a few weeks. Here’s what has building up in my del.icio.us account. Remember, if you have a librar* blog that you want to share, send me the URL [stevenmcohen @ gmail.com) and I’ll be happy to post it. [...]
Why Libraries Blog
July 4th, 2006I was taking a look at the Waterboro Public Library (CA) Waterloo Public Library site after seeing a link from Michael and saw this article about their blog. An interesting quote from Christine Brown:
“Brown, who has a master’s degree in library and information science but is self-taught in computer literacy, draws her inspiration from [...]
More On the New SCSL Site
July 4th, 2006My application for access to the South Carolina State Library site was accepted today so I had a bit of time to create a profile, upload a picture, and, after posting to my blog (!) inside the community, was “friended” by one of the SCSL web administrators! There is lots of interesting tools in [...]

South Carolina State Library Launches New Site
July 3rd, 2006My heart fluttered a bit when I saw a Flickr shot of the new site for the South Carolina State Library.
Ok, an RSS feed. Cool. Then I read their post about the site:
“The new design takes advantage of the latest technological advances in content management and social networking software. Built on the open [...]
How to Transform
July 3rd, 2006I’m learning a lot about change lately (sometimes, it’s forced upon you), and these commments from Leslie Burger’s speech at ALA resonate. Tips on transforming communities for libraries:
“1) The first is to be passionate. Believe 150% in what you do. Share your passion with others. Engage in shameless promotion. Be out there in the [...]

From the release:

Trends I Love to See
July 3rd, 2006Rick Librarian posts about some trends he saw at ALA. A few that got my juices flowing in a good way:
“6. PowerPoints were down. I went to three programs with no PowerPoint presentation at all. Only one program that I attended was totally PowerPoint driven.
7. Handouts were down. Few programs had any handouts at all [...]
Criminal?
July 1st, 2006Have you seen this? A library patron was arrested in Texas for having overdue books. It was even listed on the Police Department Press Briefing. Since the content on the URL will change on Sunday (I think), I’ve taken a screenshot (Crossed out the name and DOB).
Yeah, let’s treat ctizens like this [...]
