Help Out Lethal

July 22nd, 2006

Laura Harris has a question about a very good cause.

“AASFA [Ann Arbor Science Fiction Association] would like to use the money earned from this convention to donate science fiction and fantasy literature to local school libraries.

I’ve been asked to do a bit of research on the logistics of this, and I’m hoping that the Librarian Hive Mind will have some advice for me. I have a few specific questions, but if you have other advice, I’d be grateful to hear it.

(1) How do we find a library (or libraries) that would be open to receiving this kind of donation? (Local library mailing lists, perhaps?)

(2) Should we have some sort of application process? What sort of criteria should we be using to select the library or libraries that would receive the gift?

(3) What about the logistics of the actual donation? Should we work together to select the actual books donated, or donate pre-chosen books, or have the school librarians suggest certain books as part of the application process?”

If you have any ideas, leave a message in her comments.
