South Carolina State Library Launches New Site

July 3rd, 2006

My heart fluttered a bit when I saw a Flickr shot of the new site for the South Carolina State Library.

South Carolina State Library 2.0

Ok, an RSS feed. Cool. Then I read their post about the site:

“The new design takes advantage of the latest technological advances in content management and social networking software. Built on the open source content management system, Joomla, the web site is a content–rich resource for the state’s librarians, government employees and citizens. Features include access to RSS (really simple syndication) feeds, blogs, calendars, forums, discussion groups, and more.”

Joomla is similar to Drupal. What is important to note is that, with Joomla, every page (yes, every page) will have an RSS feed. It’s a very powerful CMS. In essence, what the state library has done is RSSified their entire web presence, in one decision-making swoop. Hats off SCSL.

But there’s more:

“We want this newly designed site to provide more functions to librarians, library organizations, and citizens,” said Dr. Curtis Rogers, Director of the agency’s Division of Statewide Library Services. “Containing information about all of our services, the site will afford library staffs a single statewide location for the free exchange of library-related ideas and issues to move libraries forward.”

Anyone can create an account with the library and get access to…well…I’m not sure, but by the sound of it, it looks really cool. I’m envisioning personalized RSS feeds, news, forums, etc. I’ve signed up for an account, but it’s moderated (as it should be) so I’ll have to wait and see if they accept out of state applications. I’d love to take it for a trest drive and write more about it (Hint Hint).

And, of course, the library has a Flickr account.

Color me impressed. And I haven’t even seen the inside yet (hint…).
