My New Job

June 25th, 2006

I’m finally caught up with life and will be blogging regularly here again. This has been the longest blogging break I’ve taken in a while and it was badly needed. I’m refreshed and ready to get back to what I love to do.

But first, a bit about my job, which I ablsolutely adore. Having spent a year and half away from the day to day operations of a library, I have a fresh new view about what libraries mean to users, especially in the legal community. Working with all aspects of private law firms, from Executive Directors to accounting departments, over the past few weeks, my days have flown by. I still can’t believe that I have a new job, and how different it is than my work at PubSub. While I don’t regret my choice to leave the library sector to go to PubSub, I do regret not coming back earlier. I really missed it. So, here I am.

First, about Law Library Management Incorporated. We work with small and medium sized law firms, providing any service that a library would be charged with, from updating book filings, to full scale research, to the day to day operations (check out, Interlibrary loan, routing), to providing the software needed to do it all (more on the software in future posts).

Essentially, we outsource library work. Actually, I should say that law firms outsource library work to us.

My job as Senior Librarian (same title as PubSub, totally different duties) is to help run the libraries for our clients, with an emphasis on the research aspect (long time readers will know now why I’m so thrilled with my new job) of the work. But, since we do everything with a small staff, I’ve paid bills, weeded collections, met with library committees, and performed research. No day is the same, and it’s always challenging and exciting. I have so much to learn, teach, and the opportunity to thrive emotionally and professionally hasn’t truly hit me yet. Can you tell how joyous I am?

Of course, I want to talk more about the job, but my time is still a bit limited. That said, my bosses will be at Internet Librarian. They have been in the business for a long time and know everyone I mentioned during the interview process, so I’ll be introducing them around to “my crowd”. And, of course, I’ll be blogging more about law librarianship here, because I’ve always believed that it is best to blog about what you know, and this is a job I’m going to be married to for a while.

Here’s to new beginnings.
