Web 2.0 Company Blog Update

February 11th, 2006

It’s been an interesting week for me:

1) Many “old school” LS readers will be shocked to learn that I’ve actually joined a mailing list. At the advice of Dave Winer, I’m a member of the OPML Newbies group. I joined because I’m really getting into Dave’s OPML Editor and the concept of reading lists and I need to learn more about it. Quick. We’ll see how it goes. So far, there’s been a little discussion that doesn’t pertain to me (which has always been my issue with e-lists) and no flames, which I’m happy about. The members of the group have been very helpful with advice as I set up…

2) …the Web 2.0 Company Blog Directory. Presently, there are 55 companies listed (with many more to come - I don’t even think I’ve breached the surface of how extensive this list will get). A huge thank you to Dave Winer for hosting it. In the future, I’ll probably break the blogs down into subscategories (easily done with the OPML Editor) but for now, it will remain one long list. You can grab the OPML here (http://hosting.opml.org/stevencohen/web20companyblogs.opml). If your aggregator supports reading lists (not many at this point, but they all will in the future - they will have to in order to survive), you only need to subscribe to the list once and every time I add a company blog, it will update in your aggregator. Also, if I delete a blog, it will be deleted. Pretty sweet, eh?

Oh, if you are a Web 2.0 company and you aren’t on the list, send me your blog URL and I’ll add it. And if you are a Web 2.0 company that doesn’t have a blog, don’t bother. ;-)
3) I’m just about finished with my portion of the event blogging manuscript that was due to ITI a few months ago. I sent one chapter off to Marydee Ojala (my co-author) last night and the next one will be in her inbox by Monday. I’m really excited about this book. If your organization blogs events/conferences, you’ll want to read it. :-)
4) I’m all sorts of excited about starting on the new book with Chrystie Hill, who has been rocking my world with her knowledge of community building.

5) I’ve received my first speaking invitation since announcing that I didn’t want to travel much anymore. The event is located in Hartford, CT which is a 2.5 hour drive from Long Island so I can do it in one day. These are the gigs that I’ll take. At most, I’ll stay over one night at a hotel, but that’s it. Having spent all day hanging out with Hallie today (and we will be enjoying the snow tomorrow), I don’t regret my decision at all. Plus, it’s not like I won’t be traveling. I’ll still be at Computers in Libraries and Internet Librarian, plus a few ALA events. So, if your event is within a few hours of NYC and would like me to come speak to your organization, give me a buzz (stevenmcohen [at] gmail [dot] com or 631-645-4516) and let’s chat about it.
