The Glories of K-12 Blogging
December 22nd, 2005David Rothman, whose blog I’ve recently become reaquainted with, links to a column written by a teacher who had initial thoughts about classroom blogs and then, after playing with the medium and having a sit down with her son, had second thoughts:
“In the beginning, I thought blogging was, by definition, a break from serious reading and writing. It was a social activity. It seemed to have no place in the classroom.”
“But blogs, at their finest, create community in spaces otherwise inaccessible to the group. Where else can students in different class periods occupy the same space? The written word also allows shy people to become bold, defensive people to become empathetic, and all of us to pause in appreciation of one another’s words. Comments and posts alike “commit act(s) of literature.” And that IS the business of the classroom.”
Don’t knock it until you try it.
