Entrepreneur Launches Web’s First Tag Directory to Raise Money for His Wedding

November 28th, 2005

I’ve been warned about tagging in the past. Spammers will get a hold of it and ruin it (enter Digg and the like as rating systems to fix that problem), there’s no pre-determined classification schema (er, duh, that’s the point), etc. Well, I think I may have met my match. According to this press release, an “entrepreneur” has created a tag directory using del.icio.us tags. If you want to be in the directory, you have to give him $20. Why is he doing this? To pay for his wedding. Actually, it was his future wife’s idea.

“I think this will appeal to anybody with a website,” Ryan commented. “The cost is reasonable for all advertisers. Every advertiser needs to drive traffic to their website. Tagging allows advertisers to list their website under multiple categories (tags) for the price of one listing.”

“Ryan believes that the tags will offer very good value since the website will be kept online for at least 10 years, although the aim is to have it up for as long as possible. “It will be kept as an archive for all to refer back to later. Tagging is something that will shape the way people interact with the Internet. The goal is for the website to become a foot note on Wikipedia (the online encyclopedia).”

So far (as of 9:47PM EST tonight), Ryan has raised $280 of his lofty goal of $250,000. I haven’t been able to come to a conclusion on this. Either he’s dumb (thinking that people will actually pay him) or brilliant (thinking that people will actually pay him). I guess my confusion will be cleared up if he meets his goal…or will it?
