Using Blogs as a Recuitment Tool
September 26th, 2005Aggie sent me this interesting article today. Ball State University is using “sanctioned” student blogs to get potential freshmen excited about attending:
“Officials say they hope high school students interested in the college of about 17,700 enrollment will track the blogs to learn more about what life on the Muncie campus is really like.
‘Technology is something kids today are so comfortable with,’ said Al Rent, Ball State’s marketing director. ‘With college searches nowadays, you can go online and get instant answers to all your basic questions. It’s the kind of immediate gratification this generation is accustomed to.’”
Could the same work for librarians? Getting librarians excited about going to library school by having library students blog about their experiences (I think one school did this, although I can’t remember which). Or, have patrons blog about positive experiences in the library to get more people walking through the doors. I think that there’s a marketing aspect to blogs that librarians, library school administration, and library directors have failed to utilize.
