Library Juice Farewell Message
September 22nd, 2005After 8 years, Rory is calling it quits. One of the first e-mail lists that I signed up for was LJ and was intruiged by the content. I always looked forward to receiving it, printing it out, and diving in. It was perfect reference desk reading.
Rory does, however, make an interesting comment in his farewell message:
“Skepticism is now also a major aspect of the way I regard initiatives undertaken by young librarians on the web, where eight years ago I simply would have found them cool.”
After reading this, I’m actually glad to read that Rory is ceasing publishing LJ. If he wants to be a cranky “old” (by calling young librarians young, he is implying that he is “old”, right?) librarian instead of someone who embraces his skepticism and writes about it (like someone else I know who does this very well - hint: He doesn’t call himself cranky anymore), maybe he could contribute more to what the “young librarians” are doing on the web. It’s a shame, too, because I respect Rory (still do). If I ever get to the point where I am skpetical and not use it to anyone’s advantage, I’d call it quits too.
Thanks for 8 great years Rory. I look forward to reading your new blog, which will, I hope will be filled with skeptical content that makes us “young” librarians think about what we do on the web is not useless.
