More on Collection Managers.
September 4th, 2005I’ve been noticing a lot of these personalized online cataloging/collection managers lately. This is, of course, nothing new as these types of services have been around for at least 4 -5 years (if not longer). 4 new(ish) ones that I have seen over the past week include Listal, Reader2, Bibliophil, and Library Thing. If you know of more (and I’m sure there are a bunch), put them in the comments section below. I’m thinking a round-up of these tools would make for an interesting Internet Spotlight column.
Speaking of Library Thing, I’ve been adding books to my account. One neat feature that Tim added today is that you can now see who else has cataloged a book that you have added. For example, 2 people have cataloged Malcom Gladwell’s latest. This is where RSS can come in handy. An idea that I had today while pushing Hallie on the swings:
Wouldn’t an inegration between Library Elf and Library Thing just rock your world? Library Elf sends a notice (e-mail or RSS) when a reserved book is ready to be picked up a your local library. Library Thing can add this data to books that have been cataloged for future reading (heck, tag them as “waiting-to-read”). If Library Elf sends notice via RSS, why couldn’t Library Thing use those feeds when supplied by the user? Maybe Library Thing can work with vendors to do the same thing, skipping the middle man.
