The library weblog dedicated to resources for keeping current and professional development

Library Stuff (5 Years Later)

August 4th, 2005

5 years ago today, I walked into my home office and started a blog. I didn’t have any intention of keeping it going this long (besides my marriage, this blog is the longest commitment I have ever made!), but I am thrilled that I did. If it weren’t for Library Stuff I wouldn’t:

1) Be invited to speak at conferences and write articles.
2) Have my column in Public Libraries Magazine
3) Met some incredible colleagues (too many to name here)
4) Have my current job at PubSub.

Lately, however, I feel as if I’ve been in a blogging slump, but after talking with a few fellow bloggers, it seems that I’m stuck without a “next-thing.” Someone told me recently that I like to find a new topic and pick at it for a while, which I see as true. I’ve always prided myself of being “ahead” of the curve. I started blogging in 2000, writing about RSS in early 2002, and first mentioned tagging in early 2004. I’m not bragging, but that’s what Library Stuff has been for me, a place to talk about new resources and technology tools. It’s also been a place for discussion of library issues, although lately it hasn’t.

In fact, lately, I’m not sure what Library Stuff HAS been. I feel a bit lost in the library blogging world these days, just going through the motions of posting neat stuff I find without placing it into any context. This could be because I haven’t worked in a “library” in 7 months or it could be because there are so many amazing librarian bloggers out there who are kicking butt while I sit at home as the guest of honor at a pity party.

These feelings have only been conscious for the past month or so and I’m sure that I will snap out of this funk. Maybe when that “next thing” comes along…

Thanks for a great 5 years!
