The library weblog dedicated to resources for keeping current and professional development

Yet Another Reason to Start a Blog

June 6th, 2005

I’ve reversed my thinking that everyone should have a blog (thanks Walt), but I still think that blogs are very useful for library professionals. For example, take a look at the following quote from an article titled, Web Sites, Blogs Can Boost Your Career:

“Blogs are also being touted as a strategy for career enhancement. The idea is for professionals to start blogs that focus on topics of interest to people in their fields. The goal is to position yourself as an expert in the field — at least among people who read blogs.”

“A blog is actually better for the career than a Web portfolio, which is just another form of the resume, said Jeff Kaye, CEO, of recruiting firm Kaye/Bassman in Dallas. A good blog can show that you are up to date on the latest ideas and news in your industry, he said. A resume or Web portfolio only highlights your past accomplishments.”

One thing that the article does not mention is putting a blog on your CV or resume. If done right, it can make you stand out in a crowd of numerous applicants. Also, adding hit count statistics is also a good idea. But don’t lie about it.
