Squik
April 18th, 2005Squik is a open-tagging relevancy-ranking system which could hold one of the keys to fight spam on these types of systems. It follows Digg in a way, in that people are not only tagging, but providing feedback on the content as well. From the site:
“Squik uses a “relative ranking” engine to decide how high each page should rank for every keyword associated with that page. This relative ranking engine ensures that people can’t just come in and get their pages ranked at the top…[b]y “relative” we mean “how does page A rank relative to page B?” Relative ranking is far different from “scalar” rating (like giving something one to five stars, for example).”
The main advantage of relative ranking (vs. scalar rating) is that people can’t cheat very easily. If we let people rate pages from one to five stars, it would be very easy for someone to rate their competition all ones and rate themselves a five. With a relative system, it ain’t that easy. If you’re asked to compare A vs. B and you try to trash A, you’ll only elevate B. Also, relative rating is more intuitive. What does three stars mean, anyway? And is my three star score the same as your three star score? Comparing one thing to another is easier.”
