The library weblog dedicated to resources for keeping current and professional development

The Joys Of Weeding

April 4th, 2005

Need a good laugh? Take a look at this blog post on weeding the library collection:

“You are supposed to discard material beyond the comprehension or reading ability of your patrons. Most of ours are doctors and nurses and pharmacists and in my experience they can read, which makes culling tricky.”

“Oh, if you throw stuff away, be sure to update your database because it is embarrassing to look for something for a doctor and not be able to find it. Same goes for nurses, though they seem to assume that you won’t given that they come in more often.”

“Don’t discard items that might circulate if pushed, particularly if the cover is pretty and the darn thing was expensive.”

“Keep space in your head at all times as you think about the layout of your library as you weed systematically or while your boss is away.”
