Cute Quote
March 16th, 2005From Nancy Allmang:
“Hi. I’m Nancy. I’m a former ICQ Addict and the only way to get out is to quit cold turkey.”
- During the sesison titled, “Technology for the Information Commons in a Special Library.”
Congrats ITI
March 16th, 2005Congrats to ITI on their 20th CIL conference.
Something to note: when this conference started, it was called the “Small Computers in Libraries” conference, which seems a bit odd to me. Weren’t computers bigger 20 years ago? I wouldn’t know. You’ll have to ask the old fogies. I’d name [...]
Keynote: Cliff Lynch
March 16th, 2005Here are my notes from Cliff Lynch’s keynote address this morning. I’m doing it in a free-flowing format rather than a “report”. Overall, a great talk. He obviously gets it, but will his predictions be right? I hope so. Culture and the Web will definitely be more intermeshed within the [...]
It Took 12 Hours!
March 15th, 2005I posted this during my workshop this morning 12 hours ago. It was published to the blog just now. Ugh.
Globe and Mail now has RSS Feeds
March 15th, 2005Roland Tanglao mentions that the Globe and Mail now has RSS Feeds. There are some restrictions, which Roland takes issues with:
“Excellent, now make them full text for dead tree subscribers like myself and again make the opinion columns accessible to subscribers instead of nickel and diming us for the bogus INSIDER edition and it [...]

March 15th, 2005Bloggers hard at work
So What’s the Deal With Wi-fi?
March 15th, 2005There is free wifi in the hotel in the lobby of the Hilton, so I want to see all of the librarians with their laptops open. Remember, this is the COMPUTERS in Libraries conference:
+ Karen Coombs mentions that there is also free Wi-fi at Tryst:
“[W]hich is just south of the intersection of 18th and [...]
Who’s a Mover and a Shaker This Year
March 15th, 2005The annual Movers and Shakers list is out and two bloggers have made it to the list. Congrats to Aaron Schmidt and Michael Stephens on their achievements.
Let the Festivities Begin
March 15th, 2005I poked around the bend and saw Michael Stephens and Aaron Schmidt. We match.
My weblog this week will be dedicated to the CIL Conference. Pictures, wifi announcements, and tons of posts about the sessions. Also, tune into the Information Today Blog for updates from staff. Onward…
Anxiety - One Year Later
March 13th, 2005Last year at this time, I thought my life was over. I had suffered a major anxiety attack, ended up at the psychiatric part of the university hospital for a few hours (thinking that I was going to be admitted, but was told that I didn’t need to be, even though I thought I [...]
Yahoo! Press Releases in Your Aggregator
March 13th, 2005Yes! Yahoo gets it yet again. You can now get Yahoo! Press Releases via RSS. The first part of a site that any company (or library) should be putting out in RSS is their press releases. Good work Yahoo. Now, if they could only fix my inurl attribute issue. Jeremy, [...]
We now have RSS feeds!
March 11th, 2005I love it when librarians get stoked about providing feeds to their users. Carol Cooke provides links to her two feeds for the Health Science Libraries at the University of Mantitoba. More importantly, she talks about a program called unidigm that she used to create the feeds.
“Yesterday, I discovered that Unidigm has done [...]
Feed Tagger
March 10th, 2005The second “Taggregator” that I have tested out this year (Feedmarker being the other) is called Feed Tagger. While not as extensive or impressive as Feedmarker, I like that these new types of aggregators are popping up. I’d love to see a plug-in for tagging feeds built into the more popular aggregators like [...]
Andrea is Gearing Up For CIL
March 10th, 2005My partner in crime Andrea Mercado (look for more collaborative work between us soon) is working like crazy getting ready for CIL next week:
“I talk[ed] the folks at ITI about putting together an aggregation and feed of all seven blogs, and …set up a Blogdigger Group (http://groups.blogdigger.com/CIL2005), which will generate the RSS feed for these [...]
This Just In: Web Feeds for Enhanced Library Services
March 10th, 2005 Gerry McKiernan links to an article [PDF] he wrote for Knowledge Quest titled, “This Just In: Web Feeds for Enhanced Library Services”. It has very extensive resources and “further reading” section, which I would expect from Mr. Bibliography. From the penultimate parapgraph:
“Other library functions and services could also be enhanced through a [...]
inurl Feeds Broken on Yahoo
March 10th, 2005I’ve noticed that two of my customized feeds in Yahoo News are not working, specificially the ones I use to get information from ALA and the White House, which use the ‘inurl’ attribute.
For example, the ALA results page is bringing back this feed, which does not include the right content.
I hope that they [...]
ITI Continues to Get it
March 9th, 2005For the first time, Information Today (the company that publishes my blog) will be blogging their own conference next week at CIL:
“Our insider’s view means we’ll not only cover what’s happening at the conference, but we can also give you some background notes, tell you about things in advance, and remind you of special events. [...]

WVU Libraries News
March 9th, 2005The libraries at West Virginia University have a blog for news (and have for some time). One neat feature (that doesn’t seem to be working at this time) is the ability to convert any post to PDF format. Cool. Also, this is one of the few library blogs to have comments enabled, [...]
Say Hello to Structured Blogging
March 9th, 2005The guys at the office at PubSub have been working on this concept for a while now and have just given me the thumbs-up to release it:
Structured Blogging is exactly what it sounds like: Having more structure to a blog entry (and more importantly, the syndicated feed behind it) in order to go beyond [...]
Feedmarker Blog
March 8th, 2005Bruno Bornsztein sent me a link to the Feedmarker Blog today. I spoke to Bruno a while back and suggested that he create a blog for geeks like me who want to follow the developments of his ‘taggregator’. Now, I can be fully aware of what is happening over there. Thanks Bruno.
Teaching Weblogs to Teens
March 8th, 2005I’m always tickled how things go full circle. In December 2003, I received an e-mail asking about teaching weblogs to teens and posted the query for some suggestions from readers. Today, I received this via IM from Michael Taylor, who works at the Pikes Peak Library District:
“I came across this post…and was wondering if you [...]
More Librarian Blogger T-Shirts
March 8th, 2005Maybe Gorman secretly likes weblogs and this was his way of helping us get to the next level. He certainly has sparked a new trend…librarian blogger regalia. Sarah links to more of them.
Library RSS Feed Generator
March 8th, 2005There is some interesting RSS/Blog testing going on at the UPenn Libraries these days. This looks like a similar project to the one taking place over at the Georgia State University Library. I’d love to hear more about the UPenn project… (link via del.icio.us)
Skype Me
March 8th, 2005There is now a Skype link on the right side of the weblog. If you click on it (and have Skype downloaded), you will be able to chat with me, just like my IM link. It’s very easy to set up. Just point the link to callto://[your skype id]. Also, if [...]
Dinosaur Blog
March 7th, 2005It’s called a newspaper! (link via New Media Musings)
Are you becoming a slave to your RSS reader?
March 7th, 2005John writes about RSS overload:
“[E]veryday I’m subscribing to new feeds (not just blogs and social bookmarks) and making search feeds…besides the overload I’m also experiencing a lots of duplication. RSS readers organise information coming in much better than email, and the subscription and reading process is much more convenient and efficient, but the problem still [...]
Will LITA Join the Blogging Efforts?
March 7th, 2005It looks like LITA is contemplating a blog. Karen Schneider is asking for input:
“LITA is considering establishing a blog, which could be used for many things but would likely start as a tool for LITA members to blog conference activities, particularly events and programs of interest to LITA members at ALA Annual 2005 [...]
More Blog People Stuff
March 7th, 2005Jenny sent over more Blog People wearables. Say it loud and proud: I see Blog People.
Mayor of Reading, PA Launches A Weblog
March 6th, 2005The Editor’s Blog from the Reading Eagle mentions that the mayor, Tom McMahon, has started a weblog (complete with RSS Feed). The Mayor writes:
“Mayors are often called by several names; blogger might be one of the more benign monikers. In any case, operating on the maxim that I will try almost anything once, I [...]
