The library weblog dedicated to resources for keeping current and professional development

I’m Exhausted

March 18th, 2005

Our track yesterday on Collaboration and Communities was a big hit. Here’s the run down (no photo’s - my camera ran out of batteries - I’ll post those later).

K. Matthew Dames rocked as the first speaker, discussing Social Software 101. (Presentation link [PDF])

- He doesn’t like the terms social software, he likes “digital collaboration”
- “Social Software”, “Social Networking”, “Digital Collaboration”
- “social software” software which supports interaction
- Mozilla is a form of social software - it has RSS feeds.
- PDA’s are on their way out.
- Blogs may ultimately replace html coded web sites.
- Syndication will be used to deliver ads. At some point, there will become quite bothersome.

Next came Will Richardson who spoke on Wiki’s @ Your Library. As Michael Stephens would say, “Will Richardson is hot right now”.

- “If you don’t know about Flickr, you need to”
- “Social collaborative construction of knowledge and information - That’s the shift”
- You can always tell the recent changes in the pages (SC: I never delete any entry)
- 100,000 to 1 is not a good proportion when you try to vandalize a site.
- “You have to have a little faith that it would work”

After lunch, Michael and Aaron took the stage and spoke about IM in your library. They rocked. I didn’t take notes for the rest of the day because I was so infatuated by the topics (that and I had a splitting headache from four 10,000 watt bulbs beaming on me all morning - note to ITI: kill those lights next year. Please!).

Megan Fox then spoke about “collaboration in the ‘Palm’ of your hand” (links). Most of us drooled over the neat new tools that she displayed on the screen.

Last, my good friend Blake Carver spoke on LISNews. One word (well, acronym): OMG!
