Tags Turning Web Chaos into Categories
March 17th, 2005An interesting article today from eWEEK titled,”Tags Turning Web Chaos into Categories“:
“Tags are creating more than straightforward classifications of Web documents or links, said Joshua Schachter, the creator of del.icio.us. One of the most popular tags created on the bookmarking service is ‘to_read,’ a tag attached to links of pages users want to remember to read. ‘There is a behavior around tags that has nothing to do with categorization,’ Schachter said.”
Yes! Getting librarians to agree with this is going to be very difficult. I’m pimping del.icio.us big time (WOW - Kevin is talking about del.icio.us right now - good timing) at CIL. I think that the collective intelligence at play is something that librarians need to attack and not shudder from. It’s ironic that librarians are so good at sharing information, yet some cringe when we see others doing it. Librarians: Learn to let go.
