Say Hello to Structured Blogging

March 9th, 2005

The guys at the office at PubSub have been working on this concept for a while now and have just given me the thumbs-up to release it:

Structured Blogging is exactly what it sounds like: Having more structure to a blog entry (and more importantly, the syndicated feed behind it) in order to go beyond just reading it in your browser or aggregator. It allows people to connect with others in more ways than ever. It allows for more organization (and then manipulation) of blog entries.

From the site:

“The sudden explosion of blogs has given rise to a number of new tools - aggregators, search engines, matching engines - many of which were made possible by syndicated feeds. Put simply, the availability of lots of XML on the web allowed the creation of new systems for processing information.”

“We believe that syndicated feeds - RSS, RDF, and Atom - are just the start. We believe that if more information could be structured, a whole new set of tools and concepts could be created.”

Imagine the possibilities:

+ You will easily be able to locate book or movie reviews from the entire blogging community (not just mainstream media) complete with rating systems and more.

+ You can find out who will be attending a particular event (a concert or a conference) and plan accordingly ahead of time. Also, the blogged content for the entire event can be easily collected and manipulated. This, my friends, is the future of event blogging. (Something we’ve been grappling with lately).

In fact, the first initiative is a plug-in for Word Press which will allows for review and event posts.

The great thing about this initiative is that it is controlled by everyone. Structured Blogging is a concept, a tool, a means to an end, and not a closed environment. PubSub has just gotten the ball rolling. We want YOU to build great tools around the structured blogging concept.

So, try it out, let PubSub know if you have any comments (feedback [at] structuredblogging [dot] org) or have built a structured blogging tool of your own.
