Personalized RSS For Your Patrons - Project Bluebird Launched!

February 15th, 2005

Jenny blogged about Project Bluebird from Talis last month. Today, via their blog, they’ve officially announced a limited launch of the project, in cooperation with Northumbria University. More about the project:

“Libraries send many hundreds of thousands of notifications and communications to users a year. New technologies allow real-time (or near real-time) communication and are cheaper than sending letters. How many libraries have yet switched to new methods of communicating with users? In the HE arena, notices are typically sent by email, but this still requires students to check for new emails. How many have yet started to investigate technologies such as RSS and SMS?”

“Project Bluebird is investigating how libraries communicate with their users, the technologies that support this and whether the network power of Talis libraries can offer any advantages”

Read more about the project and take a look at their white paper [PDF] as well. There is also a forum

And I’m sure that Jenny will have much more to say about this (Oh yeah! She’s on it). I’m just thrilled that some library vendors are finally getting it.
