And the Planets Have Alligned…
December 7th, 2004Odd. I was going to blog about Morgan’s comments on Live Journal and how well the LJ is the best blog service for building communities. Then, I saw an article titled, “Pulling sense out of today’s informational chaos: LiveJournal as a site of knowledge creation and sharing” that came out today from First Monday (haven’t read it in full yet) and I figured that the latter would be a perfect commentary on the former. I love it when that happens. Morgan, meet Kate Raynes–Goldie.
From the First Monday article: “The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how LiveJournal is a site of knowledge creation and sharing, as well as a precursor to the new ways in which we will understand the world. I will begin by reviewing the current thinking on knowledge creation and the crucial difference between information and knowledge — a distinction that is becoming increasingly important in today’s informational chaos. Within that context, I will then discuss LiveJournal as a site of knowledge creation.”
I especially like Morgan’s comments on LJ:
“I have no idea how many librarians are on LiveJournal. As of today, the libraries LJ community has 924 members and the library grrls community has 724 members. These communities are open to anybody, so some of the members mightn’t work in libraries, but presumably they wouldn’t have joined if they weren’t interested in library issues”
And don’t think that the full irony of this post was lost on me…
