Ray Matthews…

November 18th, 2004

I finally met Ray Matthews this past week. Great guy. Very humble (when Jenny introduced him to me, I tried to get on my knees and scream “I’m not worthy” right by the registration booth, but he wouldn’t let me). Ray has a lot to offer and hopefully he’ll be back next year at Internet Librarian as a speaker.

Ray was quoted in a recent article from Wired entitled RSS Edges Into the Bureaucracy about government providing RSS Feeds. The article is right up Ray’s allet since he is the guy behind RSS in Government. In fact, he is quoted:

“”If you have something that’s worth people’s time,” said Ray Matthews, a librarian in the Utah State Library System and the author of RSSgov.com, “if you build it and you have good content, with an emphasis on content, they will come.”

Matthews said RSS feeds serve as a useful advertising tool for areas of government websites many people probably would never otherwise see.

“People will subscribe to many feeds, and in the course of receiving that information, they find that there’s something interesting on (an agency’s) site, and they’ll go there.”

This article came out the same day that Ray came and had drinks after the blogging session, and he didn’t mention it to anyone. Maybe he didn’t know that it was coming out. I would have been shouting off the rooftops of the Marriott if I was quoted in Wired. Different strokes I guess. Congrats Ray.
