Librarian Syndrome

Garrett writes:

“I have coined a term called ‘Librarian syndrome’ which comes from a personal theory of mine. Women that work in jobs that force them to be on good behaviour for the entire day are much more wild in bed because they have to ‘let it all out’ in the evenings before going back to their job the next morning. When I’m sitting with my buddy JP and a girl walks by in a power business suit, hair tied into a tight bun, and ‘girl next door’ glasses… all I have to say to him is ‘Librarian syndrome’ and he knows why I find her especially attractive.”

Oy. E-mail him at toenders@hotmail.com. What was that bumper sticker I saw once? Librarians do it better in the stacks. Or something like that. Just remember Garrett, not all llibrarians are women…

Feed Your Reader

Feed your Reader is a neat extension for Firefox that allows you to subscribe to a feed in your aggregator, using the live bookmarks feature. I haven’t set it up yet, but I will. Go Firefox Go. (link via somewhere: I forgot to link to in in my draft)

Personalized Aggregators – Rankings

Codey has an interesting thought on aggregators. He wants ranked results:

“There is not a single RSS aggregator which will give me ranked results. This really sucks when you have to skim over thousands of words in a day to satisfy your need for feed. Why would I want ranked results in my aggregator when there are websites like Popdex, Daypop or Technorati? The reason is pretty simple. These sites only crawl and rank popularly linked content. I want something that does the ranking only from the piece of the pie that I consider is important. I want a link or a button on my aggregator which, on clicking, will give me the day’s most talked about link or topic”

I wish I could to this with Feed on Feeds. Right now it defaults to the listing in reverse alphapbetical order for the title of the feed. If it could rank the results somehow, even using the technology of Technoratior, Daypop, or Popdex, that would be fine too. Or, maybe I can just check off which feeds I want to appear first. That would suffice as well. Now that personalized feeds have (almost) hit the mainstream, personalized aggregators won’t be far behind. I hope.

Grow the Profession: Marketing the Librarian

I always link to articles that I have written. It’s an important marketing skill. It would also be ironic if I left this one out. The article appears in this months issue of LISCareer.com. A quote:

“There are numerous ways for librarians to market themselves, online and offline. While the method above requires the social skills necessary to “talk the talk” with the administration of an organization (in my case, a law firm), there are other ways in which we can present our ideas, project implementations, articles, and awards to the necessary personnel. This article will address three topics. First, I will talk about how the online world is full of resources and tools for librarians to market themselves. Second, I will show examples of how some librarians market themselves well in these online environments. Last, I will discuss the multifaceted reasons why librarians should market themselves.”

I have also started to post my articles on the right side of the weblog. The latest one (besides this one) is called “Eight Steps for Keeping Current”, which appears in the Sept/Oct issue of Knowledge Quest. Eventually, I’ll have my Internet Spotlight Column titles up there too.
