Blogs Speak!

June 2nd, 2004

Walt did a study a few months back about library blogs that don’t get updated and just sit there, taking up space. In this article from PC Magazine, the author talks about why this happens:

“New blogs, which are appearing faster than books or articles, have an even worse track record. There are very few really good blogs (I’d put the number at under 100). Part of the problem is how easy it is to publish them. I have one at Blogger.com and I can say, without hesitation, that it stinks. Not necessarily because the writing’s bad; more because of my total lack of commitment.”

Yet another reason to subscribe to the RSS feed. As a reader of numerous library weblogs vis RSS, I’m thrilled when my aggregator displays a new post by someone who hasn’t posted in a while. But if they don’t update, then it just sits in my aggregator until they do. Since Blogger now syndicates content, I can throw any relatively interesting new library weblog feed in my aggregator and sit back and wait. No skin off my back. And my response to someone who says that most blogs are crap: Don’t read ‘em.
