Are Counselors Confused about library degrees?
April 15th, 2004Not currency/RSS/Weblog related, but interesting nonetheless. I just had an interesting IM conversation with a student who is getting her AA degree and is interested in pursuing a degree in library science. She said:
“Now I have three counselors who obviously don’t know much about library science telling me three different degrees to obtain. I was just wondering what the standard path is and what is needed to obtain a Phd, which is where I ultimately want to do…one told me that you don’t need library science you need dynamic librarian and another told me information services…I would like to eventually reach a PhD in library science if that is still current. They are telling me its not.”
I steered her in the right direction. First, get that bachelors degree (doesn’t really mater in what field, but any liberal arts would probably be fine), then apply to an accredited MLS program. That’s it.
Do high school and college counselors not know what it means to get a degree in library science? Do they not think that to work as a librarian (most of the time) requires an MLS? Do they not know the necessary means to go about getting the degree? This conversation scared me a bit. Do we need to go into these schools and do some educating on the topic? Is this being done? Comments?

I have been searching for months on-line on how to become a librarian. I cannot find a consistent answer so I don’t know what to do. I want to be able to get a degree online.
I would love some help and direction. I am a 43 year old mother of 5 and would like to go back to work in a few years.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
